What is Hemp Oil?
Hemp Oil is a generic term referring to the extracted byproduct of hemp. This can reference several things and unfortunately the term has been abused in the industry to mislead customers into purchasing products that don’t provide the desired effects. This article will help define the two main types of extractions (Hemp Extraction & Hemp Seed Oil Extraction) and what to look for when purchasing Hemp Oil based products.
What is Hemp Extract Oil?
Hemp Extract Oil contains CBD and that’s what provides the desired benefits. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has a patent on High CBD Hemp Extract for being a Neuroprotectant and Antioxidant. This type of Hemp Oil is derived from a type of hemp that is specifically grown to have a high CBD (Cannabidiol) content. The high CBD content allows for cost effective extraction of CBD into a High CBD Hemp Oil.
There are many different ways to extract the plant material, but ultimately, there are 3 main types of resulting in High CBD extracts:
1.) Raw Hemp Extract
2.) Fractionally Distilled Hemp Extract
3.)Isolated Hemp Extract.
For these types of extracts the flower or bud of the hemp plant is ground and placed into and extraction unit. The resulting oil is Raw Hemp Extract that generally contains between 40% and 60% CBD content. This is what authentic CBD products are formulated from.

What is Hemp Seed Oil?
Hemp Seed Oil has 0% CBD content. While it does have medical and nutritional benefits, Hemp Seed Oil does not contain any of the benefits outlined in CBD studies. For this product hemp seeds are pressed and the resulting oil is Hemp Seed Oil. This oil contains Omega-3, Omega-6 and other essential fatty acids.
So what should I look for when shopping for Hemp Products?
In conclusion, if the product only says “hemp oil”, this does not mean that it contains CBD or will provide the desired effect you’re looking for. If the product says, “hemp seed oil”, know that this product contains 0% CBD, unless otherwise stated.
